Building and connecting paths

Create path objects, connect output handles and edit existing configurations.

❗

Beta routing editor

Work in a suitable test environment first. A connection changes the proposed processing path, and applying it can affect every site that uses the source object.

Create a path

The right-hand Site library contains five creation tools: Site, Filter, Route, Redundancy and Connector. Despite its name, the library creates each of these path types. It is not a list of existing paths.

Drag a tool onto the canvas, or click its + button. Clicking an existing node instead opens that object's properties.

  • Filter, Route and Redundancy create new staged nodes. Set their name, active state and required settings. They are not created in the organization's routing configuration until Apply succeeds.
  • Site and Connector open the existing setup dialogs. Those dialogs save immediately. Read their settings carefully before saving; Discard in Designer will not undo an already-saved setup change.

Use ← Site library to return from properties to the creation tools. Open setup on an existing site or connector opens its advanced setup dialog.

Connect two paths

  1. Find the source node's output dot at the bottom.
  2. Drag from that dot to the destination node's input dot at the top.
  3. Check the resulting arrow and its label.
  4. Select the source node and verify its destination in the right panel.

You can also choose destinations directly from the properties dropdowns. The diagram and properties describe the same staged configuration.

Sites are entry points, so they do not have an incoming handle. A connector's bottom handle is On cascade. Other outputs depend on the node type:

OutputWhat the connection sets
Next pathThe next destination for a site or filter.
DefaultA route's destination when no condition matches.
A rule conditionThat specific route rule's destination.
Weight / PriorityA specific redundancy destination.
On cascadeA connector's cascade destination; drawing it also enables cascading.
+ Condition / + DestinationAdds a new route condition or redundancy destination while connecting it. Complete the new item's settings in the properties panel.

Arrows point from source to destination. Conditional arrows show the associated rule, such as Currency Equals USD, rather than an unrelated node number.

Edit an existing path

Click a node to inspect its Name, Active state and type-specific settings. Editing an existing node changes the shared object; it does not make a private copy for the currently selected site.

An inactive marker is a cue to inspect the configuration. Placing an inactive object on the screen or connecting it does not automatically activate it.

Route, filter, redundancy and connector settings are covered in Routes and filters and Redundancy and connector cascades.

Remove a connection

Select an arrow, check the source, destination and label in the Connection panel, then choose Remove connection.

This removes the staged connection, not the destination resource. Removing a redundancy connection removes that destination entry. Removing a connector cascade connection clears its destination and disables cascading. Required outputs must be replaced before the configuration can pass validation.

Remove a new node

A newly staged object has a NEW marker and a Remove new path action in its properties. Use it if you do not want to create that object. Check any paths that pointed to it and repair their destinations.

Designer does not provide general deletion of existing resources. Use the appropriate resource management pages for supported deletion workflows.

Keep paths valid

Every newly created path needs complete settings even if it is not yet connected to a site. Avoid self-connections, loops, missing targets and incomplete route rules or redundancy destinations. Designer checks connections for routing loops and validates the proposed configuration again during review.

Moving a node beside another node does not connect them. A visible arrow or destination field establishes the connection.
